A New Year Countdown festival with its theme “Lights” will be held in Nguyen Hue pedestrian square in downtown HCMC on the night of December 31 to ring in the New Year 2018.

The festival is expected to be arranged by Vietnamese German director Tuan Le who has gained popularity among the local and expat audiences through the critically-acclaimed shows such as A O, My Village and Teh Dar, in conjunction with music director Michael Choi.

Speaking at a press conference late last week in District 1, Myke Brown, production director of the music festival, said the countdown music party on New Year’s Eve is promising to carry the audience into a story about the development of HCMC and Vietnam as well, which have preserved its traditional values through fantastic music and dance performances.

Scores of leading Vietnamese celebrities will show up at the countdown, such as Vietnamese- Australian singer Thanh Bui, Vietnamese choreographer Alexander Tu Nguyen, singer Ai Phuong, DJ Addy Tran, Trong Nhan, the winner of Vietnam’s Got Talent 2016, and The Lyricist dance troupe.

One of the highlights of the festival is the presence of Allan Pineda Lindo, better known as Apl de Ap, a Filipino American musician, rapper, singer, and record producer. He is also a member of the Grammy Award-winning hip hop group. After gaining outstanding achievements in the American music industry, the Filipino American artist decided to return to the Philippines to give a helping hand to young artists to set a foothold in the world’s music industry.

Singer Thanh Bui told the Daily at the news conference that the festival boasts a combination of Eastern and Western cultures with the participation of international artists, highlighting the exemplary achievements of the city in 2017 and promoting the tourism image of the country’s fastest-growing city to international friends.

This is also a special chance for him to fulfil his dream when inviting many overseas artists of Vietnamese origin to attend the countdown to create an opportunity for such artists to find their roots and call for their contributions to the development of the country, Thanh Bui added.
