Senior police officer found dead in office

HCMC – Vo Tuan Dung, deputy director of the Anti-Hi-Tech Crime Police Department (C50) at the Ministry of Public Security, was found dead in his office in Hanoi on May 4.

According to the General Department of Police, Dung, 55, died at about 7:30 a.m. in his room on the ninth floor of the Ministry of Public Security building at 47 Pham Van Dong Street, Hanoi.

Local media reported that while investigating the high-profile online gambling ring run by Phan Sao Nam and Nguyen Van Duong, Phu Tho Province police had a couple of working sessions with Dung, including one that took place a day prior to his death. Before charges were pressed against the case, Dung and other individuals were told by the ministry to give reports.

Minister of Public Security To Lam had suspended Dung from active duty.

After almost a year of investigating the gambling ring, Phu Tho police have charged nearly 90 people, including two superiors of Dung. In particular, Phan Van Vinh, former head of the General Department of Police, and Nguyen Thanh Hoa, former director of C50, are alleged to have abused power while on duty and organize gambles respectively.

Nguyen Thanh Hoa is in police custody for his alleged involvement in a protection racket for the gambling ring.

According to the ministry, the gambling ring had nearly 43 million accounts registered, equivalent to more than 14 million people participating in online games. This is the largest gambling ring ever detected in Vietnam.
